Shot 'em Up Over Color

The article titled "Racial Motive Seen in Mississippi Shooting" was posted in the New York Times in 1996.  This article describes and event that occurred involving a busy, mainly black shopping center, and Larry Wayne Shoemake.  Larry Shoemake was a 53 year old man who was found dead after he fired and approximate 100 shots into a crowded shopping center.  He killed one and injured five.  He died in the fire that he set of the shopping center.  This neo-nazi white supremacist was found dead with an AK-47, MAC-11, AR-15 and a 12 gauge shotgun laying next to him.

I found this article disturbing because of the level of hatred showed in his actions.  I find it hard to believe that one man could hate a group of people so much, that he would think that it would be a good idea to go shoot up a shopping center.  It makes me sick thinking about this man and what must have been going on in his head.

  1. The neo-Nazi movement is huge in America. It is very scary. You did a nice job with your 5 Cs. I really liked your title and choice of subject matter although the date wasn't current.

  2. I really found the story sad but a great topic. I feel I am more related to this since I went to a human rights conference today. As for a con it would be great feedback to hear of one of the surviving victims had any comments.

  3. First of all, very compelling title, so salude to you! Secondly, great choice in articles. I like that you pulled from a well known newspaper like the New York Times, despite the outdated article. Even though it is well known that Neo-Nazi's exist, I'm not sure many people are aware of their extreme actions today (versus in WWII), so I am glad you were able to find something that brought that to light.

I think this might be a good potential topic for your paper.

  4. I completely agree with you. It is sickening to think that people can hate without a cause and to the extent of murdering others. I will never understand what goes through shooter's heads but racially motivated crimes are ridiculous. I like how you picked an article that involved not just bullying but an actual offense in a larger scale. I think it was very eye-opening.
